Japanese House Walkthrough
HEATING SYTEMS
1. Air Conditioner
We have a
heating/cooling unit in every room of our home. In some rooms, these units are
"built-in" and "added."
2. Electric Heater/Gas Heater
/Kerosene Heater
3. Electric Stove /Kerosene Stove
These don't
make a room warm soon, but once the room is warmed up, its temperature is comfortable.
4. Floor Heating

We have this system only in the
floor rooms with flooring (ie, linolium, wood stats). The heat rises from the floor. It is
not used in traditional Japanese rooms that have "tatami", or straw mats, on the
floor.
5. Kotatsu
2 types of Kotatsu

Kotatsu is a Japanese traditional
heating device. It is a low square table equipped with an electric heater and covered with
a quilt. A wooden board as large as the kotatsu is placed on the quilt so that it can be
used as a table. The picture on the right is the kotatsu with an opening under the floor.
It gives more room for legs. ( An electric heater is placed at the bottom of the opening.)
They are called "horigotatsu" in Japanese.
6.Built-in air system in the
Bathrooms
It is available for heating,
dehumidification, drying clothes. This is only for new homes.
